Dr Wang Zhi Xiang - Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan
Dr Wang Zhi Xiang is a man of many excellences, a Chinese Calligrapher, a
Doctor of traditional Chinese medicine and tuina specialist, and a High level
Master of Tai Chi. Mostly he is a man of great character with an open heart. He
grew up in Shanghai and began his study of the Internal Martial Arts at 13. At
first he studied Henan Xin Yi Liu He Quan. At 18 he started studying Tai Chi with
Dong Bin whom he studied with for over 20 years. He learned all aspects of the
art including the martial aspects from him. In the 1990’s, he studied Wu Style
with Wang Hao Da who was a renowned student of Ma Yue Liang.
But it was meeting Master Wang Zhuang Hong that changed his life. It really was
one of those situations whereas when the student is ready the teacher really
does appear. It was a chance meeting, Dr Wang helped heal his mother in his
capacity as a Chinese doctor and Wang Zhuang Hong offered to teach him Tai
Chi. Dr Wang at first politely turned him down thinking his teacher was one of
Shanghai’s best. Wang Zhuang Hong urged him to do push hands with him and
when he did, Dr Wang realized just how truly great he was. Dr Wang began his
study with Wang Zhuang Hong in 1997 and didn’t look back. Today he is
considered the only lineage student who received and understands the
complete art as passed down from Wang Zhuang Hong, who unfortunately
passed away in late 2008. Wang Zhuang Hong refined a form of Tai Chi that can
be called “Wang Style Tai Chi”(it is not named after himself but Wang Zhong Yue
one of the authors of the Tai Chi classics). This form is loosely based on the Yang
style but incorporates more whirlpool(spiral)like motions.
The system Dr Wang taught to me has 3 forms which ultimately help one to
understand and develop the principles as taught by Wang Zhuang Hong. The
first is the traditional 108 movement Yang Style form which helps develop the
foundation and flow within the movements, The second form is the Yang style
fighting form learned originally from Dong Bin and is used to train wave like
motions and the third is Wang Zhuang Hongs’ higher level form. Dr. Wang is
renowned for his push hands, free fighting and tai chi energetics. A truly rare
Master who not only possesses high level ability and understanding, but can
clearly teach and explain the deeper principles and meanings of Tai Chi.
