Master Qian Zhao Hong – Henan Xin Yi Liu He Quan   Master Qian Zhao Hong is the most dedicated internal Martial artist I have ever met. His total mastery of Xin Yi Liu He Quan is truly amazing. Xin Yi Liu he Quan is an internal martial art. However, when I lived in Shanghai and I would watch many teachers and students of Xin Yi do there form, many would have this ferocity and hardness that runs counter to much of what the internal martial arts are truly about.  And then there is Master Qian, who would move with such grace and effortlessness. Yet if you were on the receiving end of one of his strikes, throws, chops or he grabbed your fingers to do Qin Na on you, immediately you would feel the terror and the knowing that if this man ever came at you for real, you would be helpless to defend yourself no matter how good a martial artist you might think you are. His level and abilities are that awe inspiring. It is a great relief that this awesome power is held by such a gentle man who would never purposely cause injury or harm. All this is done with an amazing softness. Often times, Master Qian would ask you to touch and feel his arms or legs while moving and there was never any hardness just  soft relaxed muscle and the power that comes from total relaxation.  Master Qian had many teachers. He grew up in a section of Shanghai that was known as the “Wushu village” named for the number of incredible high level martial artists there. His neighbor was the famed Xin Yi teacher Lu Song Gao with whom he studied with.  Master Qian began teaching at 27 and has trained several high level artists and national champions. He has a reputation for being one of China’s top fighters who has fought and won many challenge matches with other Kung Fu Masters, though today he is much more interested in teaching Xin Yi to promote health and the continual refinement of the art. Besides Xin Yi, he learned a very obscure form of Tai Chi called Spiral Tai Chi which is a distillation of the 5 major schools of Tai Chi as well as Bagua and Xin Yi. He learned Spiral Tai Chi from its founder Chen Zi Jheng.  He was always very clear with me, saying that it was his practice of this form of tai chi that really influenced his understanding of Xin Yi. The softness, the understanding of the Tan Tien and learning to become empty. The system Master Qian taught me includes; the ten animal forms, the fighting form, push hands, free fighting, qigong and Spiral Tai Chi; which has both a short form and long form.  Waking up every morning at 6AM to train with him at Zhong Shan park is truly one of my most cherished memories of my time living and training in Shanghai.
